296.08 // Selonian Shipyards Announce Layoffs

The Selonian Shipyards have announced that they will liquidate no less than one-thousand jobs in the coming fiscal quarter if profits continue to decline. The shipyards, based around the planet Selonia in the Corellian system, have been facing a decline in investor confidence since the Alliance announced plans to downsize military contracts. With almost a third of all profits coming from the manufacture of parts for the Alliance navy, the long-term prospects of one of Selonia’s largest companies are now under intense scrutiny.

Analysts have postulated that that the Selonian Shipyard’s profit losses are due to a failure to adapt their products to peacetime demand. Tenlin Crespin of C & R Strategic Investments Group voiced this opinion during an interview on Skyline Nightly.

“Selonia has a very strong manufacturing capability, their ability to establish a production line and maintain a high output is something that has been admired for centuries. Their weakness is in the old-fashioned business ideals; refusing to diversify offerings by shifting more R&D into civilian product lines. The Mon Calamari Shipyards has done this with rampant success during peacetime market shifts. Holding on so tightly to military contracts will cast a negative light on the company, portraying them as a flailing arms manufacturer that doesn’t understand how to retain and employ a workforce when their products are no longer in such high demand.”

Though no government officials could be reached for commentary, sources have confirmed that the Galactic Alliance has no plans to change their current parts and equipment contract with Selonia.

Corellian shipwright unions have publicly denounced the announcement, claiming the business case for the layoffs is weak. Spokespersons for the unions have strongly hinted that they will poll their members on the possibility of industrial action should no concessions be obtained from the Shipyards in a timely manner.

295.31 // Umgullian Execution

After what can best be described as the shortest trial in peacetime history, the Umgullian Racing Commission passed the unanimous verdict of ‘guilty’ for Gran gambling promoter Toryak Vu today. Vu was convicted of three counts of blob race manipulation amounting to track-rigging, chemical enhancements, and insider gambling.

The Comission has been critisized heavily for their adherance to what has been called ‘outdated, draconic laws’ by many, but a strong grass-roots movement supporting the strict enforcement of rules has shown itself in the Coalition for the Protection of Non-Sentients.

Jude Alkorda, senior spokesperson for CPN responded to the verdict by saying…

“The Commission’s decision to uphold their long-standing death penalty is more than than just an exersize in soverign governance, it is also proof positive that laws protecting non-sentient beings are alive and well in our cold, un-feeling society. The care and protection of all non-sentients, be they blob, poly-pedal, or avian is a responsibility of all who value the sactity of life.”

In holding with Umgullian law, Vu’s execution will be carried out by the end of the cycle in a private facility as soon as his final affairs have concluded.

295.25 // Luka Sene Advisory

Thanks to the efforts of Master Kara Yelay of the Arkanian Enclave, a number of historical documents pertaining to the Order’s relationship with the Miralukan Luka Sene tradition have been uncovered and are under study at the Alzoc III Enclave. We have not recieved word yet from the Luka Sene Administrators as to the long-term home for these documents, but we will cooperate fully with their requests in the upcoming months so that we can maintain good relations with them.

Those interested in additional study and information regarding these items should contact Knight Azra’elre’nim or Knight Aslyn Denethorn, resident archivists of the Alzoc III Enclave, who are spearheading research and chronicling of these important documents.

295.17 // Terror Above Kuat!

Kuat Drive Yards is on the lookout for an Aqualish male after being the victim of sabotoge earlier this afternoon. Seventeen dock workers are listed as being in critical condition after an orbital construction frame was set on a collision course into one of Kuat’s orbital shipyards, compromising environmental integrity and causing several billion credits worth of damage to the incomplete ship and the shipyard’s support frames.

Thanks to expedient actions on behalf of support crews, the shipyard’s geosynchronous orbit was adjusted and brought back to stable conditions within the hour. Recovery and relief efforts were further expedited upon the arrival of Jedi Master Jared Quell, who proceeded to oversee evacuation of the injured construction teams. Master Quell, long-time friend of the family-owned and operated Drive Yards, was not available for interview, but did help officials confirm the ‘destructive intentions’ of the saboteur, ruling out the possibility of technical error on behalf of the company.

Security officials are now circulating the above composite sketch of the infiltrator, characterized by an over-sized right tusk and un-characteristicly calm demeanor. Any information leading to the arrest of this individual should be reported immediately to Galactic Alliance security.

295.14 // In Memoriam

It is with great sobriety and humble repose that we announce the passing of Jedi Master Mardus Jeul.

Mardus-Tol Jeul, better known as ‘Master Mardie’ among his close friends and associates, has spent the last seventy-six years of his life residing at and re-building the Arkanian Enclave. He became one with the Force on 295.13 in his personal chambers, as witnessed by his students and peers.

Master Jeul was born on 191.02 at Iziz city on Onderon to the captain of the Paladins and his wife. He was adopted into our Order at the age of three when he demonstrated to be remarkably adept at sensing the Force in various beings. This often led to him being accused of cheating in childhood games of hide-and-go-seek with his Padawan clan. At the age of eight he was taken by Jedi Master Nagu Ponst, and after a tumultuous thirteen-year apprentiship, was granted the title of Jedi Knight just one hour before his twenty-first birthday.

As a Jedi Knight, Mardus-Tol Jeul was an avid and constantly engaged mediator; often working with the likes of respected diplomats such as Senator Tinlu, Jedi Master Vos Desu, and General Lon Stazi. After seven years of active work in the field, he announced his intent to re-build the walls of the Arkanian Praxeum. After only three years of labor, assisted by his then-Padawan Kara Yelay, he managed to rebuild the humble Enclave into a place of meditation and study that would go on to establish itself as a central hub of Jedi research in the fields of medicine and the healing arts. He would later go on to study and investigate the relation between these two, assisting the likes of Jedi Knight Coren Ran in establishing many of the practices now in use today by the Circle of Healers.

Though his knowledge of the healing arts easily out-paced his skills at their use, Knight Jeul’s communication skills were un-paralleled among his peers, making him the fitting choice to spearhead the High Council’s reforming of the Jedi MediCorps. In 245 ABY, after what he would later call a ‘brief, but entertaining decade’ in that position, he was bestowed with the title of Jedi Master; both in recognition for his service to the the Order, and to the greater goodness, health, and well-being of the galaxy.

Master Jeol was characterized by his incredible capacity for kindness, as well as his pervasively friendly demeanor; never failing to make any individual feel welcomed or wanted. By the end of the cycle, his lightsaber and holocron will arrive on Coruscant, and will be added to the Archives here. He is succeeded by Master Eolk Trenthz on the Jedi High Council who will also take over his duties as overseer of the Medicorps.
