Biography

Vaela Serein was born on the Mid Rim world of Mirial to a family deeply concerned with appearances, discipline, and social standing. From the time she could walk, she was taught the importance of poise, restraint, and emotional control. Her mother often reminded her that graceful young women were meant to be quiet, composed, and agreeable at all times, especially in the presence of guests.

Unlike many children her age, Vaela grew into an unusually timid and careful child. She spoke softly, apologized frequently, and rarely acted without first looking to an adult for approval. Though naturally observant and intelligent, she often struggled with the fear of disappointing others and became deeply uncomfortable whenever attention was directed toward her.

Her older brother, however, was the complete opposite.

Confident, outgoing, and forever testing boundaries, he possessed the kind of fearlessness Vaela secretly envied. While he often thrived at social gatherings and family events, Vaela could usually be found lingering at the edges of a room or quietly slipping away whenever she could.

From an early age, Vaela seemed unusually drawn to animals. She often preferred their company to that of other children and displayed an uncanny ability to sense their moods and distress. More than once, she alerted caretakers to frightened or injured creatures before anyone else had noticed a problem. Her family regarded it as little more than a charming quirk.

Everything changed during an important gathering hosted by her parents for several honored delegates.

While adults socialized throughout the estate, Vaela slipped away to check on a small animal she had befriended among the household grounds. When she arrived, she discovered her older brother and several other children cornering the frightened creature. Though they had not intended genuine cruelty, what began as teasing had escalated as they attempted to capture and contain it for amusement.

The animal was terrified.

And somehow, Vaela felt that terror as though it were her own.

Panicked and overwhelmed, she shouted for them to stop. When they ignored her, something inside her broke loose.

The Force answered.

Witnesses later recalled a sudden invisible shockwave tearing through the area. Crates overturned, decorations shattered, and several children were thrown backward. Vaela’s brother struck the ground hard enough to suffer minor injuries, while the frightened creature escaped into the surrounding grounds.

The entire incident lasted only moments.

For Vaela, it never truly ended.

Though no one openly blamed her, the atmosphere within the household changed noticeably afterward. Servants became hesitant around her. Conversations would stop when she entered a room. Her mother, once merely strict, became visibly tense whenever Vaela showed strong emotion of any kind.

More than anything, Vaela became ashamed.

Ashamed that she had lost control. Ashamed that she had caused a scene in front of important guests. Ashamed that her own brother had been hurt because of her.

In the months that followed, she became even quieter and more withdrawn, doing everything she could to remain perfectly behaved and emotionally restrained. She came to fear her own emotions deeply, believing that if she ever lost control again, someone else might be hurt.

When reports of the incident eventually reached a visiting Jedi, Vaela’s Force sensitivity was formally recognized. Though frightened by the prospect of leaving home, she accepted the opportunity to train at the Jedi Temple with equal parts fear and relief.

For the first time in her life, she found herself hoping there might be someone capable of teaching her that sensitivity was not the same thing as danger, and that the Force within her was something to understand rather than fear.
