Trust

Soh Raun

Trusting people, having faith in them, can have two meanings in my opinion: if I trust them, I can for example tell them a secret and be sure they won’t reveal it, or ask them something and be sure they will do their best to achieve it. Trusting a person can also mean that I will refer to its judgment even if I disagree, and hold its words as true. I trust my Master and the Council this way : they are wise, very attuned to the Force, and have much experience.

But misplaced faith can be highly destructive. Indeed, it is easy to be betrayed by people we trust. A well-known example of this is the young Anakin Skywalker, who trusted Senator Palpatine instead of the Jedi Council, and fell to the Dark Side. But even if people are trustworthy at some time, they may be subject to change – even Jedi can be perverted by the Dark. Thus, it is good to trust friends but we mustn’t be blinded by this faith.

There is also another form of trust : trusting oneself. It is indeed important for a Jedi to trust his own mind, to have faith in what he thinks right, to have faith in his beliefs. Doing so allows to get rid of doubts and gives a kind of motivation. If we have faith in what we do, we’ll do it as best as we can and not only try : “Do or Do not, there is no Try.” It is very important not to hesitate, because an uncertain path leads to nothing.

But once again, this can be dangerous if it comes to over-confidence. Indeed, we must know our limits and not overstep them. We must observe humility and call ourselves in question. I know I am not always right, and I am still young, but even grown-up Jedi can do mistakes. To correct them, we must stay unbiased and listen to the Force.

And this is the most important thing to trust: the Force. As Jedi, we must have faith in the Force itself, the Light, and never doubt it. The Force guides us, both our actions and thoughts, we have to listen to it to understand its will. Moreover, we must stay objective when doing so, so that our understanding won’t be altered by our own judgment, or even by emotions if they aren’t properly mastered. When unsure of which important decision to take, the best thing to do is to listen to the Force, as it will always show us the best path to take.

So to conclude, I believe the one and only thing a Jedi can trust without any limit is the Force. This doesn’t mean we can’t trust anyone – of course we can. But even someone very trustworthy can do mistakes, whereas the Force is always right.
